Hittin Triples

Building the world’s most advanced technology from the middle of a cornfield

VCs like to swing for the fences, so they strike out a lot. PEs prefer singles and doubles since they’re less risky. But they’re both missing something important.

Systemizing high-growth by consistently hitting triples. Very few can do it.

During my baseball career I hit a lot of triples:

  • I watched how the defense moved in the outfield.

  • I picked my spot with precision and practiced executing it with a wide variety of pitches.

  • Fastballs, change ups, curve balls.

  • I threw the hands, and poked it into deep right center, then got on my horse.

  • Rounded the bases with my right foot on the inside of the bag as my trajectory curved around the diamond.

  • Many times I hit third base standing up, but sometimes sliding under the glove.

  • Safe!

I cleared the bases, put points on the board, and helped win games.

When I wasn’t up to bat, I was screaming for my team. In fact, many of us did it. So much so that our reputation proceeded us. We intimidated teams before they even stepped on the field.

We won a lot of games, with a record that would make the 90s Bulls proud.

So, if the analogy to business isn’t clear, let’s break it down:

  • Study your competitors.

  • Build product where they’re not.

  • Operate with power, speed, and precision to execute consistently. Practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

  • Make some noise in the market. Your messaging should simultaneously attract fans and future players, while intimidating opponents.

  • Clear the bases, get points on the board.

  • Reinvest in the team, and keep kicking @$$.
